Master in Design Engineering
If you’re looking to build on a strong foundation in design by studying the “big picture” aspect of designing for interactions, which involves communities, organizations, cultures, contexts, and systems, our MDes program can help you. Throughout the program, you’ll work with some of the brightest thinkers and most talented practitioners in the field, gaining exposure to approaches, ideas, and methods at the forefront of design. Studies rooted in communication, systems thinking, futuring, speculative design, design technology, ethics, and design research form the basis of the MDes. You’ll learn how to apply rigorous processes for documenting, analyzing, and understanding the past and present to propose more desirable systems and interactions for the future.
CAREER COACHING
We suggest highlighting between 3-5 of your most compelling exemplars of creative work. The most important role of a portfolio is to clearly communicate your skills, experience, and perspective. Your portfolio must include your name and contact information and be submitted as a stand-alone PDF formatted document. You may submit your portfolio of up to 20 pages maximum and 20MB total PDF file size.

Graduate
Dan's global, top-tier experience and expertise will be invaluable to Masters Design Lab and its students. Our graduates leave our program with the visual design and making skills, knowledge, theories and methods to take on the types of unstructured problems that industry continually faces. Ideal for professionals within the fields of design, communications, marketing, and related areas, our program is entirely virtual, so you don’t have to interrupt your career to earn your degree. You’ll learn through a blend of online lectures, group discussions, and applied coursework—all of which you can complete from your home or office. MDes students may apply for GSI positions, when they are available, for undergraduate design courses offered at The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. These teaching opportunities are optional and MDes students are expected to be able to balance GSI responsibilities with their own educational commitments with little difficulty.
This path allows the integration of diverse disciplines from top tier graduate programs at the University of Michigan to balance rigorous coursework, trend-setting research, and practice. Our graduate programs are grounded in the belief that both human connection and individuality matter. Each cohort comprises approximately a dozen students for a total of less than 50 master’s students in the School of Design each academic year, enabling all faculty, students, and staff to get to know each other well.
Fall Semester, Year 2
With an intersection between design, management, and communications, you'll develop a holistic understanding of creativity and the design process while mastering the managerial insights and leadership strategies needed to deliver business-focused outcomes. Rather than shy away from ill-defined situations, our graduate programs face them head-on. You’ll employ processes that enable you to confidently navigate open-ended challenges and design comprehensive approaches to improve living conditions in thoughtful and meaningful ways. Applicants select one of four domains of study—Ecologies, Narratives, Publics, and Mediums—and undertake a core set of courses, including research methods and related topical courses.
The culminating project can be completed individually or on a team, virtually or locally, and in close interaction with faculty and industry leaders. Every program of study brings together rigorous design methodology and domain expertise. Prior students have studied design in a wide range of domains, including sustainability, design for low-resource settings, and digital services. For a list of requirements to complete your graduate application, please see the Graduate Division's Admissions Requirements page. It is also important to check with the program or department of interest, as they may have additional requirements specific to their program of study and degree. In our experience, strong portfolios often opt to describe a limited selection of projects in depth, rather than account for a large breadth of projects superficially.

Our program’s success is rooted in a robust curriculum that emphasizes Design Thinking and User-centered Design. We’ve forged valuable partnerships with leading industry organizations such as IDSA and esteemed companies like Revo, Helen of Troy, and Movado Group, offering our students unparalleled opportunities to engage with professionals in real-world settings. They’ve demonstrated their prowess by clinching top honors in national competitions, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the National Traffic Safety Design Competition and 2nd place in the Under Armour design competition. Moreover, their commitment to community projects is commendable, having contributed their talents to initiatives like designing habitat rooms for the Montclair Animal Shelter and building a playground for the Montclair YMCA. Graduates of the Design Science program are uniquely positioned to build bridges between key stakeholders bringing future employers in advanced industries and government settings the skills needed to meet the challenges of innovation in today’s workplace. The program expands students’ career paths to meet the growing need for the interdisciplinary design of complex products, devices, and systems.
Following that domain foundation, each student then forges an individualized trajectory, leveraging course offerings across the GSD, as well as other schools and departments at Harvard. During their fourth semester, MDes students from all four domains come together to focus on collaborative advanced research in the form of open projects, in which their expertise finds application on a current issue. Establishing Master Designs as a one-stop-shop from design to production, it eliminates the customer having to manage their project between a designer, printer, and CNC shop… hoping every vendor along the way stays true to the plan and deadline. Master Designs will manage your project from a napkin sketch all the way to shipping the finished product.
In rankings of design schools based on career outcomes, our graduate programs consistently come out on top. Our alumni acquire some of the most desirable positions in the field, with multinational companies, design firms, and nonprofits. Some of our alumni become design researchers and educators, and others start their own businesses.
As smart devices proliferate, our connections to the world are increasingly mediated by technology. How can we design devices, interfaces, and new systems (even those not involving technology) that achieve their objectives while providing an enjoyable human experience that respects the privacy and other ethical considerations? The program challenges students to create, study, apply, and teach design principles using quantitative, qualitative, and analytical methods and processes.
This year’s Parking Permit Design Contest was a resounding success, receiving dozens of submissions from UTSA students looking to show their UTSA pride through their inspiring artwork. Campus Services has carefully reviewed all entries and is pleased to announce the winners. “All that was background to an urgency, in my mind, to help students literally vote, but also to take the temperature down on the vitriol and provide places and ways for people to think and talk across profound differences,” Olsen said. All donated bikes will be given to Pedal It Forward, a local nonprofit that will refurbish your bike and return it to the U of A campus to be gifted to a student in need. "Greenway urbanism proposes new forms of urban development organized around town walks, cycling trails and equestrian trails, rather than conventional street networks," Luoni said. We cordially invite you to witness firsthand the remarkable talent and dedication of our senior Product Design students.
Our world faces increasingly complex, often unpredictable dilemmas of consequence to human lives and living environments, including rapid urbanization, climate change, and resource scarcity. The MDE program prepares innovators who operate both creatively and analytically, think strategically, and collaborate broadly. MDes students are expected to complete , a professional development requirement for the program. Requires students to engage in an experience outside of an MDes course or studio where they apply what they have learned in a broader context. Experience typically takes place in the summer between the Spring and Fall semesters and is uniquely defined to align with students’ interests and career goals. Through thesis project work and your choice of electives, craft a generalist degree in design for interaction, or develop a concentration in design for services or social innovation.
